To ensure your application is received on time, please submit your University application, along with all supporting materials, at least a month prior to the application deadline. Please note only applications received by January 15th will be reviewed for funding.
- An undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- GRE Score:
- M.S. Applicants: A minimum score of 300 between quantitative and verbal sections.
- Ph.D. Applicants: A minimum quantitative score of 155, and a minimum score of 300 between quantitative and verbal sections.
Make sure that you have read below for application requirements and upload all documents to ApplyYourself PRIOR to submitting your application. DO NOT send paper copies.
All materials MUST be received by the application deadline for the semester you are applying to in order to be reviewed.

The following items need to be sent directly to Admissions, do not send these items to the Department.
- Official Transcripts
The GRE score must be current (taken within the last 5 years) for it to be accepted by the Department. The Department requires Master of Science applicants GRE score to be a minimum combined score of 300 on the quantitative and verbal sections. Doctor of Philosophy applicants need to have a minimum quantitative score of 155 and a minimum combined score of 300 on the quantitative and verbal sections. Send your scores to School Code: 4853.
A personal statement is required when you submit your Department application. Please submit a brief personal statement (1-2 pages) describing the kind of professional and academic studies you hope to undertake and your goals for this degree. The Departmental Admissions Committee pays close attention to this statement. Please prepare it with care and consideration. Please include the area that you wish to specialize in your statement.
Letters of Recommendation
Three (3) Letters of Recommendation are required for an application to be complete and must be submitted online. Students currently completing the Nuclear Minor at the University of Utah are required to submit one letter of recommendation from a professor in their major. On the AppyYourself application there is a section for applicants to enter the names and email addresses of your recommenders. They will receive an email with a username and password which will allow them to upload their letter to the application. Academic Letters of Recommendation are preferred. If preferred, recommendation can be submitted with this form.
Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded in the ApplyYourself System. If admitted to the University, official transcripts will be required and need to be sent to the Admissions Office.
